A 529 is a tax-advantaged education savings account. Growth is tax-free, and qualified withdrawals (tuition, fees, books, housing) are tax-free. Many states give a tax deduction for contributions. You can use any state's plan for any college.
Since 2024, up to $35,000 can be rolled over to a Roth IRA (lifetime limit, $7,000/yr). You can also change the beneficiary to a sibling or use funds for K-12 tuition ($10,000/yr).
